Apparently, the ice around Ontario - which forms the Great Lakes region of which the Niagara River is part of - was covered with ice as thick as 2-3 kilometers. The Ice subsided around 12,500 years ago and gave way to the Great Lakes Basin comprising of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, The Niagara River, and further down the St. Lawrence River

Everyone agrees that one of the most spectacular scenes you can see on planet earth today is the Niagara Falls. It is part of elaborate water systems that forms the Great Lakes basin. As a tourism circuit, it is unrivaled. The Niagara Falls is nestled on the US-Canadian Border. It is the southern appendage of the Niagara Gorge.

The Niagara falls are divided into 3 major parts. There is the America falls that stretches between the Prospect point all the way to Luna Island; there is also the Bridal Veil Falls that stretches further down from Luna Island to the Goat Island and there is the Canadian Falls that stretches from the Goat Island to the Table Rock.

There is so much that you can do at the Niagara Falls. You can visit the picture perfect Cave of Winds and Rainbow Bridge and take pictures that will make your friends jealous, Gamble at Niagara Falls Casino, Have a picnic at the Niagara Falls State Park, Take a hike at Goat Island, enjoy some theater at Rapids Theater, Get a birds view of the Falls at Prospect Point Park Observation Tower, Take your kids out to the Incline Railway or even enjoy the morning breeze at the Hyde Park.

There are more than 47 hotels in the vicinity of the Niagara Hotels. As a tourist, you need to have a good budget as most of the hotels do not come cheap. Some families and university kids opt to come with their own recreation vehicles to avoid hotel boarding fees.
