What to Expect on a Cruise to Antartica

What to Expect on a Cruise to Antartica

Do you want to see the white majestic view that is Antarctica? Getting there is not easy, nor cheap, but it's totally worth it! In fact, it welcomes over 25,000 tourists each year, which is big considering its location.

As we've already mentioned, getting to Antarctica is not as easy as other destinations. You have to take a plane, train, or automobile to reach the port of departure (usually Argentina) then you can board a ship for a guided tour. There are around 20 ships operating Antarctica cruise tours, each carrying 38 to 200 passengers. Guided tours include the Antarctic Peninsula region, the Weddell Sea, the Antarctic Circle, the Ross Sea region, the Falklands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Cruises last around 10-21 days, depending on the package you purchased.

Although expeditions vary per cruise tour to the Antarctica, you can expect these things:

  1. During the continent's summer (November to March), trips will go to ice-free zones. Expect days to be long and temperatures to climb up to the 40's (F).
  2. You will see only water during the first part of your tour. This is the best time to attend on board presentations.
  3. Expect for your trip itinerary to change due to bad weather. A good captain will work with nature, not against it. You'll thank him for that!
  4. Landings will usually include penguin colonies, research stations, and historic sites.
  5. Good news! You don't need a visa when heading to Antarctica unless you'll be visiting other countries en route.
